RO/DI Filter Installation

Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Systems

What is Reverse Osmosis/Deionization?

RO stands for Reverse Osmosis and RO/DI is for Reverse Osmosis Deionization which is the same as a Reverse Osmosis system with an extra DI stage of filtration which filters your tap water down to ZERO TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). While RO systems are suitable for freshwater aquariums, it is necessary to utilize an RO/DI system for mixing saltwater and replenishing freshwater lost due to evaporation in a marine aquarium.
A standard 4 stage RO system includes the 4 basic stages necessary to filter your tap water down to 0 TDS which means the product water will be pure H2O with no other dissolved compounds or contaminates. For situations in which the RO/DI system is used heavily or the supply water is heavily contaminated, it may be useful to invest in a 5 or 6 stage system instead in which an extra carbon and/or extra DI stage is included.

Why is RO/DI water commonly used in aquaria?

Simply put, RO/DI systems strip the water of EVERYTHING. It takes out all impurities that you don't want in your aquarium such as: chlorine, phosphates, and nitrates. These type of things are generally found in tap water. Phosphates and Nitrates are food for algae, which is that inevitable force in all aquariums. However, RO/DI systems help keep unwanted algae away, and from putting too many nutrients in the aquarium. Just because tap water is safe to drink doesn't mean its safe for fish, or any livestock in an aquarium for that matter.

What is needed to get a RO/DI filtration system?

  • Cold Water Supply
  • Water drain (for the waste water)
  • A small area to store the unit and allow it to purify water
Where can I store this filter, and how big is it?

RO/DI units can be placed under a sink, mounted to a wall, or even only brought out when in use. The systems themselves are NOT very big typically ranging about 14"L X 8"W X 16"H.

What benefits does this unit bring?

  • Making your own aquarium water
  •  Top off water from evaporation
  • Peace of mind that your water is filtered
  • Source of purified drinking water (depending on model)
  • No  carrying buckets back and forth to the fish store
  • Saves time and money
